Day 21, 24. June, Thursday
In spite of the fact that the weather was overcast and on-and-off rainy we decided to visit the Viaduct de Millau viewpoint. I mean, who knows when we’ll be back? It was a good decision. Firstly the weather got slightly better as we approached the outlook, providing good views of this spectacular structure.
The visitor center was well worth the stop – lots of interesting displays of how the bridge was constructed and a well-done film about the design process. It’s amazing how such a huge structure can be so elegant and simplistic. An example of truly great design and execution.
On the way back through town we stopped at the grocery store, which always involves a studious visit to the wine section. So many of the lesser-known regions are hard to find at home, we inevitably pick up a bottle or two.
By the time we were finished at the grocery store it was getting on towards 2:30. We decided to drive in search of the next campsite and not do any more tourist activities for the day. We headed northeast along the river Tarn, stopping several times to take pictures of the beautiful valley (even in the rain) and spectacular rock formations.
In spite of a couple of photo stops, it only took us a half an hour to reach the town of Le Rozier and found a nice place in a municipal campgrounds located at confluence of the rivers Tarn and Jonte.
As we arrived it was pouring rain and finally in the early evening it cleared up and we got out for a walk around the campgrounds.
I made us a simple dinner of an omelette with regional sheep’s cheese, tomato and onion, accompanied by a delicious corn flour baguette and a glass of Cote du Rhone.
Donnerstag, 24.6. Brücke und Le Rozier
Nach Aufstehen immer noch Nebel. Also gingen wir in Millau einkaufen und schon wieder blieben uns neben Lebensmittel und Eis einige Flaschen Wein in den Fingern. Interessant fand ich auf dem Platz vor dem Einkafscenter 4 große Münzwaschmaschinen. Da kann man während des Einkaufs die Wäsche waschen, gut oder wie denkt ihr? Inzwischen aufgehellt, starteten wir ganz schön beraufvzur Brücke, genauer zum Aussichtscenter.
Vorher schon die Brücke von verschiedenen Punkten fotografiert. Das Besucherzentrum war schon Klasse (eine Schulklasse war auch da) und es gab verschiedene Videoinsen, wo du einzelne Phasen des Baufortschritts verfolgen konntest. Und dann einen excellenten Fim auf Grossleinwand. Du kamst dir vor, wie wenn du live dabei gewesen wärst. Sehr beeindruckt fuhren wir zurück und setzten unseren Weg fort auf der Landstraße (leicht regnerisch) Richtung Le Rozier am „Gorges de la Jonte“.
Es regnete noch als wir am Campingplatz Wasser auffüllten und einparkten. Markise raus und Tisch und Stühle, Regen hatte aufgehört. Aber es war zu kühl geworden und so aßen wir Saras überaus leckeres Omelette innen. Sara schrieb noch, ich ging früher schlafen.
